Atlanta, most of which is in Fulton County, received a separate grant under the Greenspace Initiative for $2.6 million. The county is already heavily developed and, like much of metro Atlanta, sadly lacking in parks and greenspace.
Last year Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes established the Greenspace Initiative, providing $30 million to the 40 fastest growing counties in the state. Georgia has 159 counties. The directive orders the counties to preserve 20% of their land for greenspace.
