ROYAL OAK, MI-It’s not clear how the Main Street Development in Royal Oak will be affected by a recent vote by the City Commission to create a historic district for certain portions of the project. The former Royal Oak Savings Bank, a structure built during the 1920s, and a clothing store next door on Main Street will enjoy protection under the district. Under the district, the neo-classical exteriors of the buildings cannot be disturbed.

The Morningstar Group of Chicago wanted to demolish the buildings as part of its planned $45-million development project, which includes restaurants, a Barnes and Noble bookstore, the Gap clothing store, offices and condominiums. The project would stretch along Fourth and Main, Fifth and Main and Fourth and Center streets. Exteriors cannot be touched on the buildings, but the interiors can be renovated in any fashion. A company official said he has to examine the decision and determine how it will affect the development.
