The study of 60 metropolitan areas by the American Electronics Association and the Nasdaq Stock Market found that San Diego had 60,000 technology workers in 1998. The report shows that San Diego is the nation's third-largest city in consumer electronics manufacturing employment.

Workers at San Diego's 2,200 high-tech companies make an average salary of $53,000 a year--69% more than the average private-sector wage.
