Some $27 million of the $41 million addition is slated for expanding the station's capacity. It currently serves about 13,000 riders daily. Planners estimate a tripling of that number over the next 20 years. The other $14 million is earmarked for parking decks, sidewalks and other items. The additional funds are being acquired through a bond issue.

Construction is under way on the first of two 14-story, one million-sf office towers that MARTA will lease to BellSouth Corp. The tower is expected to be completed in early 2002. The Center is being developed by MARTA in a joint venture with Carter & Associates.

The project has been beset with opposition from nearby neighborhoods. One neighborhood managed to stop work on the site for 17 days earlier this year, but recently lost its bid for an injunction to stop the development.
