City Pushes to Complete Work on West Side Community Center

KANSAS CITY, MO – Delays continue to hinder the complete opening of the Aguirre Community Center, on the city’s West Side. Work on the $4.3 million neighborhood center is more than two years behind schedule due to a variety of setbacks.

The center, at 2050 W. Pennway, is now partially open – the upstairs gym and some weight equipment can be used, but the swimming pool is not operational and more than 50 other items must be fixed before the city can take over ownership. Delays included changes in the original plans, land acquisition and scheduling conflicts that did not allow subcontractors to put the roof in place before last winter. Now the city has contacted the project bonding company in an effort to remedy the problems.
