Met Council Mulls Way to Preserve Aggregate Supplies

ST. PAUL, MN-Earlier it was thought there was a 37-year supply of aggregate, but when land protected by agricultural preservation programs or developments that already locking up acreage are taken into account, there is only enough to last 17 years.

ST. PAUL, MN-To protect aggregates (gravel pits) in the rapidly developing Twin Cities region, the Metropolitan Council is considering a variety of actions, including linking aggregate resources to regional transportation and airport systems plans, in which those plans could be moderated if they affect aggregate supplies. The council also is considering reviewing projects that would endanger aggregate supplies, or may simply ask communities to preserve aggregate supplies within their boundaries. Earlier, Met Council reports said that the Twin Cities metropolitan area had aggregate supplies enough for the next 37 years, but factoring in land protected by agricultural preservation programs or developments that are already locking up land, the timeline dwindles to about 17 years.
