New figures suggest that the region has increased in population size by 5.6% since the 1990 census. The fastest-growing county is Livingston, growing 39.9% from a population of 115,645 to a current estimated population of 161,843. The largest numerical gainer was Oakland County, which added 151,976 residents since 1990, ending up with 1,235,568 people in 2000. Other county numbers were:
Macomb: 1990 - 717,400; 2000 - 777,515.
Monroe: 1990 - 133,600; 2000 - 148,983.
St. Clair: 1990 - 145,607; 2000 - 168,298.
Washtenaw: 1990 - 282,937; 2000 - 318,461.
Wayne (including Detroit): 1990: 4,590,468; 2000 - 4,847,973.
