Area's First Duany-Designed Urban Village Plans Spring Ground-breaking in Southwest Sector

CHARLOTTE-Developer Charley Hodges' Ayrsley is a 129-acre mixed-use development with an estimated $1 billion build-out tag near the Interstate 485-South Tryon Street interchange. Noted town planner Andres Duany of Miami-based Arquitectonica created the Ayrsley concept.

CHARLOTTE-This area is getting a one-of-a-kind mixed-use development that developer Charley Hodges is betting will change how people live, work and play for the rest of their lives. The 129-acre project is Ayrsley, an urban village designed by noted town planner Andres Duany, a founding principal of Miami-based Arquitectonica. The project is scheduled to break ground by spring near the Interstate 485-South Tryon Street interchange.

The estimated $1-billion undertaking will take an estimated four years to complete. Instead of a segregated office park, shopping center, subdivision and residential complex, Ayrsley will be a large urban village with residences above stores, offices next door to restaurants, sidewalks and pocket parks, all linked in a pedestrian-friendly environment.

The project’s dense nature would allow more homes, stores and offices to fit in a much smaller area. The 10-story to 12-story hotels would be the tallest buildings. There would be no single-family homes, townhouses, apartment buildings or lofts. Hodges hopes the project will attract young professionals and technology workers.
