While the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society objected to 100 feet, the group told city council members that it supported a maximum height of 50 feet, citing other retail districts - including College and Piedmont avenues in Oakland and Main Street in Walnut Creek - that have similar height restrictions at 35 to 50 feet.

Opponents argued at a December city council meeting that there is no economic need for tall buildings. Robb Ratto, executive director of the Park Street Business Association sees it differently. Although Ratto had asked the city council to keep the height restrictions at 100 feet, he says the Park Street Business Association was willing to accept a 60-foot height limit to accommodate preservationists concerns while making it easier for developers to consider a Park Street site.
