Denver-based Fentress Bradurn Architects has designed the project, with Greeley-based Hensel Phelps Construction Co. acting as general contractor for the $15.4-million facility situated on 7.2 acres. Hensel Phelps is the largest general contractor in the state, with more than $1 billion in projects under way at any given time.
The complex features two courtrooms. Presently, municipal court and county court are houses in separate buildings. Two thirds of the new building will accommodate city offices while county operations will occupy the remaining space. The county is kicking in $3.3 million toward the project cost.
"Everyone is very tight on space today and they're sharing desks," says Babs Cornell, the county's facilities planner. "Probation and the district attorney will have more space for their current and future staff."
The entrance of the new building includes a simple dome form that will make the building easily identifiable as a civic facility. A pedestrian arcade will wrap around the exterior and provide a shelter for the entrance. The building's skin will consist of a color concrete masonry and multiple colors of brick in keeping with exteriors of the city's older buildings. The interior design will include three separate circulation paths: public, staff and a secure area. The restricted areas will help maximize safety and ease for visitors. The design also boasts energy-efficient features, including use of natural light.
