The two groups are planning a series of events using celebrities from the Save Our Heritage advisory board who were also involved in Walden Woods. The Walden Woods Project successfully garnered publicity and funds for its cause and was ultimately able to halt industrial development at Walden Woods by buying the land for preservation. Save Our Heritage faces a more formidable task because Massport owns the airport. Also, because of air traffic delays at major airports, smaller, regional airports are being developed near most large city airports.
Shuttle America began service to Hanscom in September of 1999 and it now has 34 flights daily. Opponents to Hanscom Field expansion cite the increase in air and car traffic as detrimental to local towns, the national park and historic sites.
Among those involved in Save Our Heritage are Don Henley, Christopher Reeeve, Ed Begley Jr., Gregory Peck, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. The group plans on conducting concerts, lecture series, writing op-ed pieces and organizing walks through the area in an effort to fund raise for their cause as well as heighten awareness about the issue.
