The terminal expansion project is part of the airport's proposed $800 million development program that includes 18 projects that will enable the airport to ultimately handle 13.8 million passengers and one million metric tons of cargo. Airport officials anticipate the number of annual passengers to grow from more than 10 million to 14 million over the next five years.

Hellmuth, Obata, Kassabaum Inc.'s aviation group has led the planning and design of more than 40 major airport projects worldwide, including Lambert-St. Louis International Airport Main and East Terminals; the Washington Dulles International Airport Midfield Terminal, Orlando International Airport Airside 2 and South Terminal Complex, San Francisco International Airport Boarding Area G and London Heathrow Terminals 3 and 5.

The other three firms all have experience at Bay Area airports. KPa, which has a long-standing relationship with the Port of Oakland, has also been involved in recent projects such as the passenger corridor connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, seismic renovations to Terminal 1 and ADA improvements and ramp modifications to Terminal 1.

Kwan Henmi has also been involved in the design of several projects at Oakland International Airport, including the expansion of baggage claim areas, improvement of security systems and the upgrade of support facilities at Terminal 2. In addition, the firm is currently working on the airport's interim exterior graphics program.

Powell & Partners, which could not be reached for comment, has worked on Oakland International Airport's second floor addition and with Hellmuth, Obata, Kassabaum Inc., on SFO's Boarding Area G.

The firms have started work on the new Oakland terminal project, which is expected to take several years to complete, according to sources close to the airport contract. No word on the exact date the project is to be completed.
