Consolidated Freightways is a 71-year-old long-haul, transport company headquartered in Vancouver, WA. CF Mexico, headquartered in San Antonio, operates 22 terminals, nine within Mexico and 13 in the southwestern US. "The economic patterns caused by NAFTA have developed the number of US joint ventures with Mexico and we're beefing up to meet that demand," says the CF source.

CF Mexico's Laredo terminal, 13 miles north of the US-Mexico border, will be the company's biggest project with the addition of a 51,000-sf warehouse and terminal. The terminal will include 93 dock doors and 5,200 sf of office space. Laredo is CF's primary hub for southbound freight into Mexico. The facility will replace a smaller 30-door, four-acre operation. Modern Construction Inc. of Laredo is the general contractor on the project.

The company's Rio Grande Valley Terminal in McAllen will handle shipments that previously had been processed at dual terminals in McAllen and Brownsville. CF has leased 6,500 sf of office and dock space at a larger facility in McAllen with 20 cross-dock doors.

Construction is expected to be completed in February on the Phoenix terminal. The 64,000-sf, 121-door terminal is under construction on a 30-acre industrial site with access to Interstates 10 and 17. BremCo Construction of Long Beach, CA is the general contractor for the Phoenix project.

The Laredo expansion will handle increased shipments coming from Mexico, the CF source says. The Phoenix facility has been expanded to handle the increased demands from incoming freight arriving from the West and Pacific Northwest and heading to the Southwest, Mexico and remaining US regions. CF Mexico reports shipments in 1999 had quadrupled over the previous year and expects the final 2000 revenue count to top $230 million.
