PEPCO sold its four major power plants to Southern Energy Inc. in Dec. 2000. It also signed a four-year contract with Southern Energy, Inc. to purchase power its customers need at prices below Pepco's current average cost of production. The power plants along with other related generated assets in Maryland and Virginia sold for $2.75 billion. Their combined capacity was 5,200 megawatts. Pepco's portion of the 1,711 megawatt Conemaugh was 166 Mw.

Pepco retains ownership of its two in the District of Columbia (806 Mw) power plants that Southern Energy is contracted to operate.
