Wal-Mart Wants To Build Third Supercenter In Johnson County

OVERLAND PARK, KN-A 23-acre site here that has remained undeveloped for five years despite rezoning for commercial use is being eyed by Wal-Mart for a 204,000-sf discount store and grocery under one roof.

OVERLAND PARK, KN-The city planning commission here will decide this week on whether to rezone property at 159th Street and Metcalf Avenue to allow Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to build their third supercenter in Johnson County. Wal-Mart is purchasing the land from Leland Brown for an undisclosed amount.

The land has been zoned for a strip mall for a 234,000-sf shopping center for five years, but no tenants have committed to the center, according to city planners. Wal-Mart plans to build a 204,000-sf facility on 23 acres. The supercenter concept includes the traditional Wal-Mart discount store with a grocery, all under one roof. If the rezoning is approved by the city council and permits are obtained, construction would begin as early as late spring or early summer.
