The marrying of the two projects is expected to spark development along the deteriorating nine-block route up West Trade Street. The five-block project, which has already stepped up the working population in the area, is beginning to take on a more civilized look as the two Gateways link up. New light fixtures, landscaped courtyards and gardens are expected to be installed by spring.

By spring the Gateway Center's DoubleTree Hotel will have spent about $4.5 million to complete a makeover of its guest rooms, kitchen and common areas. Bank of America has spent about $10 million to add 500 parking spaces to the Gateway Center parking lot, bringing its total to over 1,000 spaces.
