Popular Downtown Coffee House Shuts Its Doors

PLEASANTON, CA-A couple eyeing retirement and faced with costly is throwing in the towel and shutting its doors last week. The couple will either lease out the two-story building or sell it off.

PLEASANTON, CA-Java lovers better find a new location to acquire their daily caffeine fix. The popular historic downtown Coffee Roast Express has closed its doors. Owner Ed Churka and his wife Diane closed the two-story building last week after 12 years of working in the coffee business, and now plan to lease the space and use the income for their retirement. The Churkas designed and built the structure themselves.

No word on who might move in at the 780 Main St. location. The couple might opt to sell the building, which took three years of construction and 12 different sets of plans before opening in 1999. Last year, the Pleasanton City Council ordered the couple to install a wider elevator and an expensive sprinkler system to meet city requirements before the second floor could be leased out as retail space. The Churkas, who are currently spending about $80,000 to install the sprinkler system, plan to lease out the top floor as office space.
