The 22-acre project stands at 2600 Garfield Ave., just north of the Santa Ana Freeway. The historic site, once known as Vail Field, was developed nearly 75 years ago as the home of one of Southern California's first commercial airlines.

More recently, the property was used as a Vons grocery warehouse. After 14 months of redevelopment, it will now serve as the flagship chemical distribution facility for Van Waters and Rogers, a chemical giant based in Kirkland, WA.

Built by Whittier-based Oltmans Construction Co., the project entailed massive remodeling, as well as the construction of more than 50,000-sf of tank farms and installation of more than 36,000 linear feet of pipe. The completed complex is "a one-of-a-kind facility in terms of volume and variety of chemicals handled," says Mark Dobrinen, director of engineering for VW&R.
