Planners to Study Ways to Revitalize Troost Avenue Area

KANSAS CITY-Planners here are putting this once-thriving neighborhood on the city's east side under the microscope, hoping to pump "new blood" into the area along the major north-south artery.

KANSAS CITY-City officials and a growing number of activists and developers are once again looking at how to redevelop Troost Avenue, which has served as one of East Kansas City’s major north/south arteries, alive with storefronts and bustling nearby neighborhoods. A new plan proposed by area developers has passed the scrutiny of the city’s planning and zoning committee and will go to full council by month’s end.

As part of the plan, the council has already agreed to spend $55,000 on an economic development study. Hammer Siler George Associates of Silver Spring, MD, was chosen to do the review. “There is new blood in the area and we are excited to get started,” said Wes Schlobohm, an area developer and owner of Best Deal Auction Systems at 1100 E. Linwood. “Troost has been studied and studied, now we are hoping to get to the implementation stage.”

The consultants, chosen from a list of a half dozen candidates, will study land and buildings along Troost Avenue from 22nd to 47th streets.
