Hilton has an in-house representative handling the talks. LASV, based in Surrey British Columbia, Canada, has plans to build a casino in the hotel. The Cartegena Hilton recently had obtained a casino license in anticipation of this addition.

LASV is weighing whether to build in existing hotel space or expand to make room for the casino. "LASV was interested in this hotel," says Hood, "because it had profitable revenues even without a casino."

The Cartegena Hilton, built in 1980, is a 289-room, five-story luxury hotel located at Avenida Al Mirante Brion near Raphael Nunez Airport. The occupancy rate is 70%, and the average room rate is approximately $200 in US currency. Hilton has just completed a conference center that can accommodate up to 1,100 people.

LASV also is eyeing a casino at another of its resort in the Dominican Republic as it makes plans to beef up its resort-casino holdings in Mexico and the Caribbean.
