AOL Buying 18 Acres for $20-Mil Call Center

JACKSONVILLE, FL-The Virginia-based Internet provider was scheduled to close the deal Jan. 15 for $2.5 million or $138.89 per acre ($3.19 per sf). The planned 123,000-sf structure, to house 1,700 employees, is expected to break ground this week.

JACKSONVILLE, FL-America Online was scheduled to close a $2.5 million deal Jan. 15 for 18 acres at the 288-acre First Coast Technology Park where the Virginia-based Internet provider plans to break ground this week on a 123,000-sf call center for 1,700 employees, according to the Duval County Research and Development Authority. Jacksonville is 250 miles north of Downtown Orlando.

The deal has been rumored for months. The $20-million call center would be adjacent to the University of North Florida from where AOL hopes to draw future engineering talent and staffers. AOL officials wouldn’t confirm the scheduled deal signing but Robert Fagin, executive director of the county agency, confirmed the event in a published report.
