The bookstore is located at 14700 S.W. Murray Scholls Dr and is the first of three planned for the Portland area in the next 18 months. Customers can rent or purchase up to 7,000 titles on cassette or compact disc and order from another 65,000 titles. The Beaverton store is expected to have about 5,000 members by the end of the year. The location features a sound dome for customers to preview their choices without headphones and without disturbing other customers. The chain has more than 110,000 members.

Earful of Books founder Paul Rush is a graduate of Oregon State University with an MBA from the University of Oregon. He had started the store in Austin in 1992 and launched a franchising program in 1998. There are now 18 stores in Texas, California, New Jersey, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. Earful of Books also has 31 new stores under contract in existing markets, as well as in Florida and New York.
