WorldCom's Project Lightspeed has been a closely guarded secret that is drawing on the services of WorkPlaceUSA, headquartered in Dallas, and San Francisco-based Citadon. Company officials had not been available for comment yesterday to answer questions about the project.

Thirteen network information centers, all outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, are being built in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, St. Louis, San Jose, Seattle and northern Virginia. The new construction totals 1.3 million sf while 146,000 sf has been leased to support the undertaking.

WorkPlaceUSA and Citadon are touting Project Lightspeed as the largest IT facility project in the Internet's history. The firms are fast-tracking the project in nine months instead of the usual 18 to 24 months, from site evaluation to an all systems-go status.

In a press release, the companies say Project Lightspeed is breaking all barriers in record-setting time and coming in under budget. "We have pioneered a true end-to-end service concept for corporate real estate," John Amend, WorkPlaceUSA president and founder, says in a prepared statement. "Project Lightspeed will revolutionize traditional project management and the definition of superior service."

WorkPlaceUSA divisions are overseeing virtually every phase of the project, from leasing and utility negotiations right down to the general contracting. Citadon's project management software has been incorporated into the landmark project. The software is considered key to vital links among WorkPlaceUSA, Clinton, MS-based WorldCom, multiple consultants and contractors for all development phases.
