The commission will give the west half of the prime waterfront property -- 189 acres – to the City of Oakland for redevelopment into offices, light industrial space, a shopping and entertainment center and a hotel and convention center. The Mayor recently proposed an Indian-run casino that would be located on the strip of land near the eastern end of the Bay Bridge.
The port will take the remaining 184 acres and use it for an expansion of its operations.Port officials have proposed expanding its marine terminals and constructing a rail yard that would allow cargo to be directly transported from ships to trains.
