PHOENIX-A local developer has purchased for $1.4 million a parcel near the landmark Tovrea Castle here and plans to build an office project on the site. Art Cunningham purchased the 3.75-acre parcel at 51st Avenue between Washington and Van Buren streets. The site fronts the 202 Freeway.

The city of Phoenix owns the antique castle, a four-story stone sculpture tiered like a wedding cake, and the 19 acres surrounding it. The home was one of the first large estate built in the Valley. Preservation groups have trying to raise enough funds to purchase the castle and the surrounding land. Two other parcels are currently up for sale.
