The city still needs to acquire the third parcel for the project, the second under Mayor Richard M. Daley's SRO Initiative. However, the city is exercising its "quick take" powers and hopes to acquire it by April 15. Closing would then occur by May 1, with construction beginning by July. Completion is scheduled for Sept. 2002.
Housing advocates have argued SROs are needed as older buildings with that use have been converted to condominiums or more expensive rental housing. CCIL, which provides job training for homeless persons, has operated a 170-unit SRO at 1801 S. Wabash Ave. since 1997. The new facility at Wabash and Harrison St. would offer job training, job placement, money management and health care.
The city's first SRO under Daley's initiative is being built at 240 W. 107th Pl. in the economically depressed Roseland neighborhood.
