The state Legislature must approve any tax relief, but State Sen. Joan Dukes, D-Svensen, has reportedly agreed to introduce legislation to create the district. Dukes could not immediately be reached by GlobeSt for comment, but a draft of the legislation is expected to be on commissioners' desks later this month. Cities will have the option to not participate.
With Columbia County and the cities of Rainier and Clatskanie, Clatsop County already is a partner in the Lower Columbia Maritime Enterprise Zone. The county joined the program in December 1999 to accommodate an expansion of the zone for the Georgia-Pacific Wauna Mill.
