Office and retail construction was up by $10 million last year, totaling $486.7 million, according to the Construction Industry Research Board. But, the year ended on a sour note, with permits issued for only $32.4 million in new projects--a drop of more than 20% from the same time a year ago.

Meanwhile, industrial construction dropped about 14.7% last year to about $165 million, but December figures were up slightly from a year ago.

Permits were pulled for 9,167 single-family homes last year, down 8.2% from 1999. The picture was better for multi-family construction, with permits for 6,765 units pulled last year, up 5.1% from the previous year.
