In a prepared statement, William R. Tiefel, chairman of the hotel company and vice chairman of Marriott International, says the search for a new president stayed within the Marriott family. Cooper was chosen for his experience in running a public company and for his broad background in operating a hotel company with vast operations, Tiefel says.
Cooper previously held executive positions with Delta Hotels & Resorts, Omni Hotels and Dan Hotels. Ritz Carlton Hotel Co. was bought by Marriott in 1995.
