If built, the approximately $800-million project would combine 250,000 sf of academic space with one million sf of rentable area. The tower, slated for five acres at the intersection of Fourth and San Fernando Streets, would have to be preleased prior to construction. The cost of those leases would fund much of the building fees, CSU finance board members said.
The proposed office tower comes at a busy construction time for San Jose State. Late last month, the school's athletics program received a $1 million gift from the Koret community project foundation. The grant was designed to help fund a new 11,000-sf athletic facility that would be known as the Koret Athletic Training Center.
Also on tap is the eight-story, 475,000-sf Martin Luther King Jr. Library, which is being built for university as well as public use.
