BOSTON-The Nipmuc Indians’ plan to erect a casino in this state faces serious opposition from the statehouse here. The Clinton administration gave the Nipmucs recognition as a tribe in one of its last acts. According to Federal law, that recognition gives them the right to run gaming facilities on their reservation, provided regulations for those facilities are negotiated with the state. Those opposed to allowing casinos here insist that that the state has final say over the matter.

Representative George Rogers is filing legislation that would allow casino gaming in Massachusetts but house Speaker Thomas M. Finneran, who did not return calls by press time, reportedly said that those gambling measures had very little chance of approval. The bill is overseen in the House by the Government Regulations Committee, whose chairman is Representative Dan Bosley, a longtime opponent of legalizing gambling in this state.
