The city is also agreeing to stop the practice immediately and comply with the federal Clean Water Act. Dalton, with an estaimted 23,000 residents, is 93 miles northwest of Downtown Atlanta and is known as the carpet capital of the world for its numerous carpet mills.
State and federal regulatory agencies, along with the Coosa River Initiative and the Weiss Lake Improvement Association, both in Alabama, sued the utility in 1998. The utility's three biological wastewater treatment facilities have a combined treatment capacity of 40 million gallons per day. The plants currently treat about 30 million gallons of wastewater daily.
The city, through the Board of Water, Light and Sinking Fund Commissioners, operates Dalton Utilities which serves the city and surrounding areas in Whitfield County.
