PORTLAND-CB Richard Ellis Inc. has been awarded a contract to attract new import distribution facilities to 115 acres in the Port of Portland’s Rivergate Industrial District in North Portland. The effort is an attempt by the Port to offset existing operations that are heavily weighted toward exports, which it believes will help attract and retain steamship service, lowering the cost of exporting because there would be less need for “dead-heading” — paying to bring in empty containers.

“Trucking also has an imbalance; they need outbound cargo, so they sort of have the opposite issue,” the port’s real estate marketing manager Peggy Krause tells GlobeSt, adding that Portland’s trucking and rail infrastructure could ease congestion at competing ports that is causing delays. “This could solve multiple situations.”
