The project, called Olympic Place, will be located at the intersection of Mount Diablo and California boulevards. The developer is locally based Blake Hunt Ventures.

Some residents have expressed concerns that the project will both worsen traffic in its already congested downtown and not provide enough off street parking. City officials say that the movie theater will be used during off-peak hours and traffic is actually better because commuters don't use the city streets to avoid traffic woes on Interstate 680 and Highway 24 interchange.

Neighboring Concord has a newer 14-screen theater and construction has begun on the 16-screen theater in Pleasant Hill's new downtown area. The five-screen Festival Cinemas in Walnut Creek, which is owned by Signature Theaters in Oakland, is closing within the next 12 months.
