Locally, a Super Crown store at 105 S. Wabash Ave. will close, as will suburban Super Crowns in Arlington Heights, Calumet City, Crystal Lake, Darien, Lake Zurich, River Forest, Schaumburg and Wheaton. Crown Books stores in Harwood Heights, Matteson and Oak Lawn also are closing.
Southern California closings include Super Crowns in Brea, Encinitas, the Laguna Niguel store at 27110 Alicia Parkway, Long Beach, Santa Barbara and Torrance as well as Crown Books in Costa Mesa, Orange and Ventura.
In Northern California, the book retailer is closing Super Crowns in Dublin, Los Gatos and Walnut Creek.
Super Crowns in Bowie, MD and Waldorf, MD will close along with a Crown Books in Potomac. The Mechanicsburg, PA closing is a Super Crown store.
The closings follow a poor holiday sales season as well as a store-by-store analysis of the chain. "The decision to close stores is never an easy one and we recognize the impact this has on the associates involved and our customers," said Crown Books President and CEO Charles R. Cumello. "However, we believe it was important to move quickly to eliminate underperforming stores. We hope that many of our associates and customers can be ccommodated at nearby Crown locations."
