McCook will oversee and direct internal real estate staff and external advisors responsible for investing in and managing CalPERS investments. He was selected from a initial pool of more than 75 candidates and six finalists.

"I am confident that he will add to our already top quality team of professionals in the real estate division, continuing to make CalPERS the investor of choice in the real estate industry."

An estimated $8 billion of CalPERS' vast portfolio is invested in office, retail, industrial and apartment properties. About $1.8 billion is invested in housing, timber, franchise finance and net-leased investments.

McCook graduated from the University of San Diego and replaces Guy Jacquier, who left last spring.
