Guthrie Theater's Plan for $100-Mil Riverfront Complex Advances

MINNEAPOLIS-The city council here agrees to sell land to Guthrie and build parking ramps at a cost of up to $25 million to support it. A similar measure failed to pass the city council last year.

MINNEAPOLIS-The Guthrie Theater’s plans to build a new $100-million theater complex on the banks of the Mississippi River in Downtown here has won the approval of the city council. Under the plan, the theater will buy up to 10.3 acres of land from the city for up to $3 million.

The land is bounded by West River Parkway and Second Street South to Chicago Avenue South and 11th Avenue South. A year ago, the Guthrie’s plans to build a new complex in Minneapolis’ Parade Stadium area received a cold reception from the city council.

The city agrees to build parking ramps — at a cost of more than $25 million — with room for up to 1,000 cars for use by patrons of the Guthrie’s new theater complex, which could seat up to 2,000 people. The new Guthrie would have three stages, including a 1,100-seat auditorium, 500- to 700-seat proscenium stage and 150-seat flexible space as well as classrooms and seminar space.
