HomePlace plans to continue operating its distribution center in Newnan, GA, about 45 miles southwest of Downtown, according to a published article. The Myrtle Beach, SC-based company was formed by a 1999 merger in which Waccamaw Corp. bought the two-year-old HomePlace, in bankruptcy proceedings at the time.
The company's debt load piled up with the remodeling of 120 stores; the installation of new computer systems; and the construction of new distribution centers in Newnan and Columbus, OH, according to the article.
As HomePlace leaves, another retailer, HomeGoods, is moving in. The company, owned by TJX Companies, has a presence in the metro area with its T.J. Maxx stores. The first HomeGoods store is scheduled to open Feb. 18 in north Fulton County, about 25 miles north of Downtown.
