Layoffs Hit Local Companies; Local Economy Boosters Say It's Too Early to Panic

SAN DIEGO-Layoffs that could have a potentially negative effect on office and industrial vacancy rates have hit high-tech companies including Gateway Computers, Lucent Technologies Inc. and Sony Electronics Inc.

SAN DIEGO-Some high-tech companies, including Gateway Computers, Lucent Technologies Inc. and Sony Electronics Inc., have laid off workers in recent weeks.

Sony’s plant in Rancho Bernardo, which makes cathode ray tubes for computer monitors, laid off about 500 workers last month, nearly 15% of its local work force. Lucent Technologies, which makes telecommunications equipment, announced last month that it will cut 10,000 jobs nationwide after reporting a first-quarter $1 billion loss.
