VANCOUVER, WA-Clark County may soon have a facility to house sporting events and host conventions. City officials gave the nod Monday to a proposed $78-million special events and convention complex that could accommodate sporting events and other community entertainment, as well as generate new revenue from visitors. While the city is in no rush to move ahead, according to Mayor Royce E. Pollard, city officials are more open to the idea now that Bank of America has come forth with financial backing for the project and a plan for lowering costs by at least $4.5 million, possibly more by using tax-exempt financing.

At Monday night’s meeting, the council expanded the authority of the Vancouver Public Facilities District to allow the council-appointed citizen group to develop the center. In doing so, the city will now be able to accumulate tax credits from the state that can be applied to cost of the project.
