The $40 million project was designed by locally based Yates-Chreitzberg Architects with whom the bank has had a long relationship. Kimbrough researched different locations with his associates before choosing a 100-acre site in Concord's University Research Park, just 20 miles northeast of Charlotte, the article states.

The park comprises 3,000 acres and is home to about 40 companies, including Wachovia's check processing center and First Union's customer information center. First Charter, which operates 54 offices in the Charlotte region, will be sharing the grounds with some of its biggest competitors.

But the important thing to Kimbrough is that all the bank's employees will be in one building, according to the article. He also felt strongly about having as much natural light as possible, having just spent 12 years in an office with no window.

Dennis Yates of the architectural firm says in the article that as relationships are developed with a client, special attention must be paid to their strong feeling about the design of a project.
