This year, the authority, which is getting its funds from about one-third of the state's share of the tobacco settlement, will distribute approximately $55 million. The monies are earmarked for more than 70 counties whose economies rank the lowest of Georgia's 159 counties. Most of them are in the southern part of the state. The grants will be used to attract industry and improve infrastructure.
The first grants will go to the town of Moultrie, 206 miles south of Atlanta and Thomasville, 245 miles south of the city. In Moultrie, the grant will pay for the renovation of a vacant facility as part of Farmland National Beef's operations. The Kansas City, MO-based beef company is investing some $8 million in a processing plant that will employ about 200 people. In Thomasville, the grant will be invested in six start-up companies that will create more than 140 jobs.
