South Georgia Communities Get State Grants

ATLANTA-In an effort to revitalize communities and bring jobs to the state's agricultural areas of South Georgia, the Georgia Legislature has issued the first wave of grants in a 25-year, $1.6 billion program.

ATLANTA-Two towns in South Georgia are receiving a total of $1.5 million from the state to infuse capital into their faltering economies and create more than 340 jobs. The grants are the first under the new OneGeorgia Authority created by Gov. Roy Barnes and Lt. Governor Mark Taylor and approved by the legislature.

This year, the authority, which is getting its funds from about one-third of the state’s share of the tobacco settlement, will distribute approximately $55 million. The monies are earmarked for more than 70 counties whose economies rank the lowest of Georgia’s 159 counties. Most of them are in the southern part of the state. The grants will be used to attract industry and improve infrastructure.
