In doing so, it extended its seven-year ban on the development of apartment communities for another six months.

The original six-month ban went into effect throughout the county and in the city of Smyrna in 1994 after the area experienced a rash of apartment development through the 1980s. County officials held that the influx of apartment dwellers was more than the infrastructure could handle and, in addition, was taxing school capacity.

Cobb County did not continue its ban after the time expired, but Smyrna stuck with it--for seven years and counting. It is highly unlikely that the town will lift the ban when it comes up for vote again this summer.

Smyrna officials maintain that the multi-family to single-family ratio has not yet reached the goal. Smyrna wants to see two-thirds of its residential property in single-family homes.
