Nonprofits Join Forces to Put Computer Technology in Low-income Neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO-Two nonprofits have taken steps to erase the "digital divide" in lower-income communities and keep the local high-tech economy and the real estate markets that serve it strong.

SAN DIEGO-Two nonprofits have opened the first of 17 computer-technology centers with the goal of erasing the “digital divide” in African-American and Hispanic communities, where large numbers of people still don’t own computers.

The Regional Technology Alliance and the Waitt Family Foundation opened the new center at YWCA South Center in Southeast San Diego. Real estate and economic development officials have long called for programs that promote high-tech training to retain local jobs and companies in the area.
