The report postsresults for 1999 that show notable increases over activity generated in 1998, according to Anne E. Conroy, director of the Poughkeepsie/Dutchess Empire Zone. She notes that the zone moved up from its second place ranking in 1998 to tops in the state for 1999.

"We worked hard to support expansion of our existing base as well as to attract new business," she says. "Business participation in the zone in 1999 showed a 15% increase over 1998 and the dollar investment in 1999 was $240 million, an increase of 65% over 1998."

The increases in 1998 resulted from major investments and expansions by companies such as IBM and Micrus. Not included in the 1999 statistics is the investment and job creation underway at the Gap Inc.'s distribution facility in Fishkill and the job creation and investments by Phillips Semiconductors and IBM Microelectronics that will total more than $3 billion.

New York State designated the Poughkeepsie/Dutchess Empire Zone in 1994 and it covers property in the city and towns of Poughkeepsie, the town of East Fishkill and Fishkill. The zone provides state and local tax credits and other incentives to businesses that invest and create jobs within the zone.
