The Largo, MD-based company employs 1,500 people and operates 90 stores located in five major metropolitan areas including Washington, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. The company says 450 full- and part-time workers will lose their jobs as a result of the restructuring.
The three Bay Area locations affected are at 1342 Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, 6694 Amador Plaza Rd. in Dublin and 636 Blossom Hill Rd. in Los Gatos.
Charles R. Cumello, company president and CEO, attributes the filing to a negative retailing environment over the past year and a weak holiday season. Crown is the largest discount book retailer in the country. It has annual sales of approximately $180 million.
