Newly State Commission Meets Today; Agency Could Usurp Power From Local Governments

SAN DIEGO-Some local officials are worried that a new state commission, which is meeting for the first time today, will weaken their say in planning decisions.

SAN DIEGO-A panel chosen by Gov. Gray Davis aimed at deciding whether and how to create a regional government agency will hold its first meeting today.

The idea behind the 11-member Regional Government Efficiency Commission, according San Diego City Councilman Byron Wear, is to consolidate several existing agencies; however, that means the region’s 18 cities and the county could be forced to relinquish some power to the new agency.

The meeting will be at the San Diego Association of Governments office at 401 B St. on the eighth floor. Legislation by state Sen. Steve Peace (D-El Cajon) created the commission.
