High-tech Real Estate: Only the Fittest Will Survive

DALLAS-It's the law of the jungle: only the strongest survive and that's most likely the way it will end up when the dust settles on the battle among high-tech real estate venues. Some will be investing more money and others will fall, but the demand remains stronger than ever.

DALLAS-George Roddy of Roddy Information Services, based here, pulls no punches when it comes to voicing his feelings about dot-coms and particularly those that have invaded his domain. “They are still freebie deals that should have never been brought about in the first place,” he tells GlobeSt.com. Roddy is a pioneer in high-tech real estate services. His connection dates back to 1987 when high-tech was in its infancy. As the industry advanced, so did Roddy’s delivery method for his fee-based service, perhaps the most highly regarded in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. And, he has no intention of pulling the plug. “It’s a necessity to spend money on technology and we plan to keep on spending,” he says. Roddy still produces hard copy quarterly reports, but it’s more of a convenience for those who have failed to change with the times.

“Our investment will be ongoing,” he says in light of other services that have been falling by the wayside. “There are always new databases that we want to add. And every time we add a product, we count on the Internet to deliver it.”

Justin G. Garrett, research director for Transwestern Commercial Services in Austin, hails from a generation that can barely recall life without a computer. Today, the 24-year-old plies his trade using the Internet for real estate research.
