The addition is a six-story, 127,000-sf tower, which will serve as inpatient quarters. The tower will house intensive-care units, private rooms and semi-private rooms. The ground floor will contain two, 10-bed intensive-care units, while floors two through six will each have 24 private rooms and eight semi-private rooms.

Although a courtyard will separate the tower from the hospital, existing corridors will connect the two facilities at the basement, ground floor and second floor. Once completed, the new tower will ensure that the hospital remains in full operation while future construction projects are under way.

Completion of the tower is slated for Summer 2002. The hospital will remain open during construction.

San Diego-based Nielsen Dillingham Builders Inc. is constructing the hospital. The project architect is Santa Monica-based Lee, Burkhart, Liu Inc.
